For safe and healthy weight loss, the profound sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda form a powerful combination. Yoga providing a system of exercises which help to burn fat, increase metabolism and promote fitness, while Ayurveda providing the guidelines for proper diet and nutrition. In this article I will explore Ayurveda, which is the science of self-healing and longevity.
A key concept in Ayurveda is that of the 3 Doshas (humours): Vata, Pitta & Kapha. A combination of these 3 bodily humours are responsible for the makeup of our human body. This article is focused on the Kapha Dosha, which is responsible for fat and is the prevalent dosha in those who are overweight and obese. Thus, from a Yogic and Ayurvedic point on view, in order to burn fat and lose weight one must reduce Kapha in the body.
As a quick review the following 3 most important points about Ayurveda need to be remembered:
1. The qualities of Kapha Dosha are: Wet, Cold, Heavy, Dull, Soft, Sticky & Fixed
2. Ayurvedic healing is based on the following 2 principles
* Like Increases Like
* Opposites Decrease Each Other
3. There are many treatment methods in Ayurveda and of these we are focusing on Diet for weight loss in this article. In future posts I will detail other Ayruvedic recommendations to reduce weight, burn fat and get fit.
So keeping the above in mind here are Ayurveda’s dietary recommendations for how to combat obesity, reduce fat and promote healthy weight loss.
General Diet Composition to Burn Fat:
* 30-40% of your diet should be whole grains.
* 20-30% protein (from both vegetarian and non-vegetarian sources)
* 40-50% mostly vegetables and some fruit.
Specific Dietary Recommendations to Lose Weight:
* Since like increases like, the qualities of Kapha should be a guide to help you choose the right type of foods to eat. So looking at it from that perspective one should reduce fatty foods, dairy, ice cream, meats (specially red meat) etc.
* For drinks, stick to hot drinks instead of cold ones. Again use Kapha qualities as a road map to help you choose. Drink teas, hot water, instead of cold sodas and milk shakes.
* Since opposites decrease each other, use more hot spices in your food. Ginger, cinnamon, coriander and other hot spices will all work to help you reduce Kapha, which is the key to reducing weight. The tastes you should shoot for in your diet are pungent, bitter and astringent. Foods with these tastes are all anti-Kapha and will assist in burning fat. The tastes you should generally avoid are sweet, sour and salty.
* Similarly increase salads, beans, dry cereals and cooked grains in your diet. Eating foods with Vata and Pitta qualities will increase those doshas in your body and will work against increasing Kapha.
* Eat one big meal a day and make it either your lunch or your breakfast.
* To avoid snacking, have a glass of hot lemonade made with honey. This will help burn fat and keep away the hunger.
Conclusion:
I hope what you begin to see with Ayurveda is that it gives you the knowledge and framework within which you can then customize the treatments you need using your intelligence. That’s why I call Ayurveda the science of Self Healing. Once you know the basic concepts, you can readily apply them to deal with any health situation that life throws at you.
Specifically for weight loss understand the qualities of Kapha Dosha and tailor your diet and life style to reduce it. When you reduce Kapha you reduce fat. From a dietary perspective, simply reduce intake of food with the same qualities and increase intake of food with opposite qualities.

Since obesity rates have increased, many people are looking for healthy ideas that will result in weight loss.  It can be tricky with all the products out there that claim to have the magic answer, but these methods might not be safe or plain simply, might not work.  Every body is unique and responds in a different way.The basic reasons to lose pounds are our desire to look and feel better, and to have more energy.  But how do you know what the best route to take is?  It’s important to set sensible goals and think of the change as a lifestyle alteration and not just something temporary.Healthy weight loss happens gradually- that is one way to know if the product is safe or not.  If it claims to make you lose more than five pounds in a week, it should raise your eyebrows.  If it seems to good to be true, chances are, it probably is.  There are, however, cases where a person has a medical condition that they can lose a lot of weight fast.  A physician should closely monitor this change.A first step to take is finding out if you are within the healthy range of the body mass index (BMI).  There are several online resources that help calculate this.  If in the overweight or obese range, start by trying to lose 10 percent of the body weight.  There has been scientific proof that losing that much can result in health benefits, such as lower blood pressure.Healthy weight loss requires research and common sense.  Making food choices can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be.  Choosing foods such as fiber-rich ones like fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grains is smart because they take longer to eat and contain less calories.  Exercise must also be worked into the routine.

Healthy weight loss can be achieved using this effective fat loss diet.So it’s just another diet, why should I care? Its simple actually, you should care for these reasons.1. It’s easy to follow and continue. 2. Allows you to keep eating and actually drop some pounds while you’re at it. 3. It’s been proven to actually keep more weight off than any other diet when you come off the diet! 4. You actually burn more fat by eating, according to the guidelines of course.Ok sounds interesting? How does it work?To perform calorie shifting you need to follow a system of eating where you essentially confuse your metabolism so it is never quite sure when to stop burning fat. Its so effective because you are constantly changing what types of foods you eat and at which times of the day you eat them. You see when you eat the same foods everyday in the same routine even if they’re low calorie or low fat or any other common dieting routine you essentially reveal to your body what it is you eat on a daily basis and your body says “ok so I’ll increase your metabolism just enough at this point in the day and then shutdown so we can conserve those precious calories”.Yes its true, unless you do something out of the ordinary your bodies first impression is to conserve whatever it is you eat. However if you eat carbs one day for breakfast then fat the next day and then protein the next etc, your body doesn’t know whats going on, but it does know that it needs to keep the metabolism up because the calories coming in are too diverse and at times to great to just sit idle. So your metabolism gets boosted, and this continues at all times of the day. This sounds like it could get confusing to keep track of, but here’s the great news! There are calorie shifting software programs that do all the thinking for you. The exact food options available to you are displayed and you’ll know exactly what to eat at any time of the day without having to think at all!Lose 15 Pounds in Two Weeks by EATING MORE! Losing weight is often considered to be one of the most difficult tasks to do. However, the actual task should be keeping the weight off. If you are already on a diet, you likely already know there are foods that are considered safe to eat and foods that are not safe to eat.

Healthy weight loss food does not necessarily have to taste like diet food. With a little creativity you can spice up even the blandest of meals and keep it healthy.

Here are some healthy foods and some trick for you to lose the unwanted pounds.

1. Foods with a high amount of water content in them naturally. For example, vegetables and fruits. These make you feel full for a longer period of time and have very little calories in them. You can try to snack on things like watermelon, cucumbers, cantaloupe and grapefruit.

2. When you have the desire to snack on something you should look for pre-packed snacks. For example, small portioned healthy snacks. This will stop you from being able to over eat the snacks. It is common for a person to have a snack while watching a movie and not realize they ate the entire bag of popcorn. To avoid this, purchase snacks that are in 100 calorie packages.

3. Chewing gum is a great way to stop yourself from eating out of boredom or habit. You should buy a pack of sugarless gum and carry it with you at all times. This will help you when you have a craving or desire for something sweet.

4. Try drinking something that is hot when you have a craving for something or you simply want something because you are board, upset or stressed out. When the beverage is hot you are forced to drink it slowly, there fore you are able to completely enjoy the flavor and satisfy your hankering at the same time. If possible, you should definitely try to only have low calorie hot beverages.

5. Adding salsa to some of your meals will increase the flavor without having to drastically add to the calorie count.

As you can see, although dieting can make you feel left out in many cases, all you need is a little creativity and you can enjoy your diet. Healthy weight loss food can have flavor that you enjoy, the key is making the flavor really pop for you. Some spices you might not have ever considered adding to your meals can add just the right amount of flavor to your diet foods.

Eating appropriately to keep you moving is what you need to instill in your consciousness to be on the right track toward healthy weight loss. You have to be knowledgeable, read and learn to avoid becoming overweight. These are simple guidelines which are hard to pursue by 35 percent of Americans who are incapable of avoiding becoming overweight. If we are overweight, we tend to want to cut those extra pounds for a lot of reasons including health issues or just for wanting to have a sexy appearance. Moreover, you can always make a decision to lose weight. In reality, it is much easier to avoid adding pounds over losing them. And one thing is apparent; weight gain is achieved once we do not apply any actions to help stop it from increasing.Health specialists tell us that several individuals who are trying to lose weight normally drift. They are more inclined to return to their bad eating habits after learning to eat low fat meals. They go back to their sedentary lifestyles after practicing how to exercise regularly.Regardless of the drive towards weight gain, you still have the power to avoid it from occurring, according to specialists. And there are several reasons why people should trim down their pounds, reasons other than social acceptance and vanity. The methods for losing weight and maintaining a healthy one is simple. Actually, it is a good thing that most people are aware of the best things to incorporate. Thus, the natural way to lose weight should not be complicated. As a result, a sensible approach for natural weight loss is through following a diet which is plenty in compound carbohydrates, modest in protein, rich in fiber and low in fat.A sample of compound carbohydrate is a baked potato. Fiber can be acquired from vegetables. Lean meats are a great source of protein. Lessen the use of butter, oil and gravy on your meals as these are the source of high fat content. In addition, specialists say that dietary fats cause weight gain since they are an intense source of calories. As you consume excess calories through dietary fat, you keep those calories and they become fat stores. It will also assist you in losing weight naturally if you will not take foods with “fat-free” labels. Manufacturers are producing items with such versions which make most American fatter rather than slimmer. The so called fat-free items might be a catch if you will begin to think that you can consume any quantity of foods which are promoted in that manner. Moreover, it is advisable to eat healthy snacks when you are hungry. Health specialists say that it is better to consume light healthy snacks every 3-4 hours amidst lunch and dinner. When you are craving food, eat some healthy whole grain bread as a snack. Do not practice skipping meals because this will worsen things. Keep in mind that when you are trying to lose weight, you also have to watch what you eat.

There are so many diets today that claim to be a healthy weight loss diet. Yet there are experts who say that some of these diets actually encourage poor health. They say that only the future will tell if some of the diets have actually caused an increase in the risk of cancer and other deadly disorders.
Losing weight has become an obsession in many cultures, and for good reason. The number of obese people in the world has skyrocketed.
There are many reasons for this such as the change in diet around the world from whole foods to processed foods, the increase in the amount of sugar we eat each day, and the use of fluoride in water, toothpaste, and even in baby formula.
Did you know that fluoride was found to cause young mice to grow up lazy? About a decade ago one doctor did a study using newborn mice who were given fluoridated water to drink.
The mice grew up to be listless and lazy, preferring to just lie around all day instead of playing or moving around. This sounds like today’s children who prefer to sit in front of video games or TV instead of going outside to play and run around.
Today’s children could prefer to sit around for the same reason as the mice in the study. Fluoride is an ingredient in the popular soy baby products used by many unknowing parents. We might have been feeding our babies a product that caused them to grow up lazy and listless and fat!
What can be done? First, don’t feed your babies anything with soy in it. If at all possible, nurse your baby for the first year. This actually helps fight obesity and asthma, just to name two.
Second, if you don’t get water from your own well, call the water company and ask if they put fluoride in the water. If they do, then buy water that does not have fluoride.
Third, get you and your children on a healthy weight loss diet of reduced levels of sugar and fat. We are supposed to eat ten teaspoons of sugar each day (or less). One can of soda can have nine teaspoons, and many people (children included) drink several cans a day!
Also, eat more whole foods and less processed foods. Check the labels of processed foods for the fat content. If the grams of fat total more than 30% of the calories, don’t eat it. For instance, if a chicken strip has a fat content of 30 grams and 100 calories, then that would be 30%.
Fourth, have you and your children begin an exercise regimen. Don’t overdo it. Strenuous exercise can actually cause more harm than good by producing more free radicals in your system. Free radicals attack your healthy cells and can reduce your immunity to illness and disease.
The best exercise is moderate exercise using weights or some other resistance exercises. This builds muscle, which helps you burn more calories and increase insulin function (which helps you avoid diabetes). There are many side benefits resulting from moderate exercise.
Start by exercising about 30 minutes a day (ask your doctor’s advice if you have a medical condition). As you start to feel better, increase your exercise time to one hour a day.
By starting a healthy weight loss diet (that doesn’t necessarily mean eating less, just better foods) and exercising every day your body fat will diminish and your muscles will increase, resulting in you and your children being healthier, happier, and more energetic.

One of the more important concepts in any healthy weight loss program is stable blood sugar. What does a stable blood sugar level mean and how is it important in a healthy weight loss plan?
When you consume carbohydrates, your body experiences a spike in blood sugar levels due to a rise in glucose in your bloodstream. In response to this rise in glucose levels, the pancreas releases the hormone, insulin. Insulin is an anabolic hormone that’s absolutely essential for getting amino acids into the muscles for growth and getting carbohydrates into the muscles where they’re needed for energy.
However, when there is a large blood sugar spike, your body tends to overreact and produce too much insulin. The insulin quickly clears the glucose from the bloodstream, leading to a sharp drop in blood sugar known as hypoglycemia. Low blood sugar is
accompanied by cravings, hunger, weakness, mood swings and decreased energy. The hunger and cravings tend to cause the sugar consumption to perpetuate itself, resulting in a vicious cycle of ups and downs in energy throughout the day.
When excessive amounts of carbohydrates are ingested, particularly high glycemic (sugar content) simple carbohydrates, insulin converts the excess glucose in the blood into triglycerides (blood fat) that are then stored in the fat cells. And, worse yet, is the release of cortisol. Cortisol is a dangerous hormone that actually kills brain cells, increases fat storage, and breaks down lean muscle mass.
So, how do we control our blood sugar levels, stop storing fat, and start burning it? The answer is found in two easy steps:
1. Choose low/moderate glycemic index carbohydrates. The natural simple carbohydrates are “healthy,” but ALL simple carbohydrates should be used in moderation during fat-reducing programs. When we talk about simple carbohydrates, we’re often referring to refined sugar and white flour products as these are the bad carbohydrates. But not all simple carbohydrates are bad. Some simple carbohydrates occur in nature. These natural sugars include fructose (found in fruit) and lactose (found in dairy products). Natural sugars are fine when eaten in moderation.
2. Combine these carbohydrates with a protein or essential oil/fat. You can manage your blood sugar and insulin levels by choosing fewer simple carbohydrates, more complex carbohydrates, eating fiber and having your carbohydrates with lean proteins approximately every three hours.
The combination and balance of a protein and carbohydrate trigger the release of another potent hormone, glucagon. Glucagon, like insulin, maintains a healthy blood sugar balance. However, unlike insulin, glucagon promotes fat burning and mobilization of fat molecules.
Advantages to maintaining a stable blood sugar level:
1. Promotes fat loss
2. Consistent energy levels
3. Controls hunger cravings
4. Reduces risk for diabetes
Excessive sugar and insulin can directly effect the strength of your immune and cardiovascular system. For healthy weight loss and to maintain and even increase your biological age, it is important to maintain stability in your blood sugar level.

One of the most common obstacles for a person trying to lose weight is emotional eating. Munching down a bag of potato chips out of boredom, depression or even happiness can be a serious detriment to anyone’s weight loss efforts. It’s not easy to overcome because life is full of events that make us change our emotions.

You could be a month into your healthy weight loss program and feeling very good about it, then all of a sudden you get downsized from your job. The first thing you do is become depressed and drive yourself to the grocery store to get a package of double stuff oreos. You know comfort foods like this will only make you more depressed in the morning, but you do it anyway.

If you want to be the kind of person who leaves the cookies on the shelf and focus instead on turning negatives into positives, the 6 tips below can help you.

Emotional Eating Tip #1: Be PreparedAs I said before, no matter what kind of life you have, there will always be something about to happen that will make you sad or happy. These moments must be expected and the solution approached with caution. What do you do when you see a speed bump in the road? You automatically slow down because you know the consequences. You were prepared because you expected it. Just like you read road signs when you drive, there are signs in life that will tell you when something is about to happen.

Emotional Eating Tip #2: DistractionsWhenever you are overjoyed or depressed about something, have a list of activities ready to take your mind off emotional eating. Keeping your hands busy doing anything besides reaching into a box of Cheez-its, is going to help you overcome your shift in emotions without eating. For me it is closing myself off to the world and practicing my guitar, playing a video game, or going for a long walk with my Ipod. By the time I am finished with any of these activities, I have usually found a solution or at least have calmed down.

Emotional Eating Tip #3: Drink A Bottle Of WaterThis does not sound like something you want to do when you are extremely happy or angry, but water fills you up and makes you feel more full. Anyone on a healthy weight loss program should have a bottle of water handy at all times anyway. When you feel the urge to eat off your program, drink the water. Trust me, it works like a charm. A lot of times people mistake hunger for thirst. Your mind might be tricking you and telling you that you need to eat, when you just might need a drink.

Emotional Eating Tip #4: Determine What Is WhatDo you crave a bowl of Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream or do you just need someone to talk to? When you’re struggling with a craving or feel driven to eat mindlessly, stop and determine what you are feeling. Condition yourself to learn the difference between physical and emotional hunger. I crave eating junk food any time something good happens and when something bad happens I tend to avoid eating. But when I am truly hungry, I will eat healthy foods.

Emotional Eating Tip #5: Focus On The Consequences Of Your ActionsIf you stop and think for a minute what that Hershey bar will feel like after you eat it, you might start building up the will power to put it down. You know you will feel bad emotionally because you threw your diet off track, so eat something healthy and get full on that instead. Think about how tomorrow you won’t even remember the taste of it. Maybe that will make you want to eat the carrots instead.

Emotional Eating Tip #6: Eat In The Same PlaceRemember the kitchen table? You know that piece of furniture that your monthly bills are usually scattered over? Clear it off and make a promise to yourself to only do your eating there, with no distractions like the tv, radio or newspaper. I know this is the age of multi-tasking, but  a lot of emotional eating occurs when we are distracted. Mindless eating in front of the tv is the worst, especially when it is done late at night.

No matter what kind of life you have, there will always be problems, even people who are in great physical shape. They may be able to arrive at their problems looking slim and trim, but they have just as many obstacles as a person struggling to lose weight. No matter who you are, you must work your emotions by expecting these obstacles. By stopping emotional eating, you can eliminate about half of the obstacles people face trying to lose weight.

There are a lot of healthy weight loss for kids programs out there. You just have to look. Kids nutritional needs are different than those for adults, yet kids learn from watching their parents about what is nutritious and what isn’t. When they see us struggling with our weight, they may struggle with it as well.
We need to set a good example as parents. All the pressures of school and friends don’t go a long way to helping the weight situation. Some kids are too thin while others are too fat. So let’s talk about kids who need to lose a little or a lot of weight and ways that you, as a parent, can help them along that road.
We all know that the weight gain doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time to pack on those pounds and it’s going to take just as much time to lose it. It would be nice to just snap our fingers and have the weight magically disappear. But unfortunately it doesn’t happen that way, we actually have to work at it. No one can change their body image unless they are willing to do the work.
There are many ways to help kids lose weight. Get involved in a family sport or any physical activity. Maybe a family exercise session. It doesn’t have to be a competition or any type of rigorous activity. Start out slow and build up to a faster pace. Take a walk before or after dinner. If you walk before dinner, you will eat less at the meal. If you work out afterwords, the body burns off some of that stored fat. The key is to make it fun.
For kids, exercise has to be fun. If it feels like a chore, they will quickly become frustrated and not want to ge involved. Try playing some kickball or volleyball in the backyard. Take a few laps in the pool. Each of these activities burns calories and gets the heart rate up. That’s a good thing. Kids can get involved with these activities and improve their weight and self esteem. It’s all part of healthy weight loss for kids. Exercise is good.
Most schools across the country have a gym class as part of their daily curriculum. Actually in many schools it is a requirement to take a gym class. When you are in a gym class five days a week it can help shed pounds and trim the waistline in no time. In class when everyone has to participate, there is no pressure on your child to be singled out.
I think the hardest part of losing weight for kids is the food. They love to eat and eat, especially the junk food. Kids think they are invincible and that extends to their body. They think they can put anything into their mouth and still be healthy but that’s not true. What you put in your mouth will determine how your body will feel.
High fiber foods will go straight through you but not before grabbing a little fat on the way. The foods that digest slower, like complex carbohydrates, keep the body fueled for a longer period of time, which is what you want. When your kid grabs a snack from the vending machine, the sugar gives them a rush for about an hour and then they feel wiped out, like they just ran a marathon.
Try to get your kids into eating healthier snacks like celery, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and all sorts of different fruit. Try to have an assortment of washed and cut up veggies on hand. Keep them in a tupperware and ready to go in the fridge so that they are easy and convenient for the little munchkins when they are hungry. Don’t forget to pack it in their lunches so that they can munch on the bus or as they walk home. Veggies can be eaten with low calorie dressings and dips to make them taste better.
So get your kids moving. Just remember as you work on the exercise portion of weight loss don’t forget about the healthy food. Teach them how to make smart choices and how important it is that they do so. Eat healthy and by doing so yourself, your children begin to make healthier choices that will serve them well for life. Don’t forget healthy weight loss for kids incorporates food and exercise. They both work together.

Learn about a revolutionary new diet system and eating program that will make you lose weight WITHOUT restricting your diet to low fat or low carb foods, rather eating the right calories. Healthy weight loss for kids, learn more about diets.
