Variety is the spice of life, and being content with living a healthy lifestyle is achievable when you can think outside of the box. When you are on a healthy weight loss program, the experience can get a bit bland sometimes if you don’t use your creativity to find ways to mix it up. Too many people quit before they give themselves a chance to find happiness with making healthy decisions on a daily basis. When it comes right down to it, there are things that you must do on any healthy weight loss program. The most important thing is proper nutrition. For me, it is in the form of a hot cup of green tea followed by a soy-based protein drink and vitamins every morning. That is how I lost over 70 pounds 15 years ago and that is how I have maintained an ideal weight ever since. What keeps me going outside of that? Variety! Once you have a firm grasp of what it takes to lose weight, you can begin using that knowledge to find different ways to get the same results. That way you are not eating the same meals and exercising the same way at the same times every single day. It’s great to have a routine, but if you don’t have variety, things can get very bland very fast. Here are 3 steps to help you add Variety to your healthy weight loss program. Step #1: Stick With What You EnjoyYou will never stick with something unless you find ways to include the things you love to do. If eating pizza is something you love, then you should not feel like you have to eliminate it just because it won’t help you lose weight. Pizza and other junk food is fine if it is eaten occasionally. Set weight loss goals to reward yourself once or twice a week with foods you love that might not have the greatest nutritional value. Just don’t eat them every day! Since exercise is a vital part of living a healthy lifestyle, adding variety in into your workouts is also beneficial. Not only does it allow you to avoid boredom, you’ll also avoid injuries and plateaus as well. Make the routines of your favorite exercises fun and filled with a variety of movements. Doing the same routines and movements over and over again won’t keep your mind interested or your body proportioned properly. I alternate between jogging, bicycle riding and roller skating. Step #2: Be creativeOnce you have a firm grasp of the kinds of foods that make a healthy weight loss plan successful, be creative with them. The soy-based protein shake I eat every morning comes in powder form. You don’t think I drink the same flavor every day, do you? I use my creativity to invent new recipes. The same thing happens with meals. Nothing is worse than trying to learn how to eat better by always having to choose the same kind of food prepared the same exact way. The same goes true for the exercise part of your healthy weight loss program. I mentioned that I alternate between different activities during the week. One way I add creativity to it is by choosing different routes and different distances. I also work out with different friends and listen to different music on the days when I exercise alone. Don’t limit yourself to a gym either. Get outside and appreciate your surroundings. There is a lot to see out there! Step #3: Stay CuriousNo matter who many different foods there are to eat, there is always something you have never tried. Whether it’s the way something is prepared or a tropical fruit you’ve never heard of, being curious about trying new things will always help you add variety to your healthy weight loss program. What happens when you are curious about something you have never tried? You either like it or you do not…but you’ll never know unless you keep an open mind and learn to trust your curiosity. There are so many advantages to being curious when it comes to exercise. It is the only way to build new muscles you never knew you had, develop new skills and meet new friends to work out with. If you have ever seen someone do something that you do not think you would like, just try it for sure and then decide. You might find that it’s something you enjoy enough to add into your mixed bag of exercises just for the sake of having even more variety. Sticking to a healthy weight loss program is extremely difficult without variety. If it was an easy thing to do all by itself, everyone would be walking around healthy and thin. But it is not. It takes a certain kind of mindset to reach your goals and if you are afraid of giving up out of the sake of boredom, it is time to add a little variety into the mix. Follow the three steps above and you will probably find yourself so busy trying new things that you will forget you are even trying to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle. People who take time for a morning meal consume fewer calories over the course of the day, have a stronger desire to exercise, and are less likely to be overweight or obese. People who skip breakfast are more likely to snack on junk food throughout the day, and overindugle on fatty meals for lunch and dinner. If you are thinking about devising a healthy weight loss plan of action, think breakfast! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You have probably heard this many times, and it’s true. Even the name says it all. It is meant to break the fast you give your body from not eating since you put your head down on the pillow the night before. How you eat when you wake up in the morning dictates how your day will go. If you are trying to implement a healthy weight loss program, eating a healthy breakfast makes the difference between success and failure. Just because breakfast is the most important meal of the day doesn’t grant you permission to go into a feeding frenzy. That’s exactly what Americas most popular breakfast restaurants are setting you up for, so make a conscious effort not to buy into it. They peddle fatty scrambled eggs, sugary muffins and donuts, and pancakes covered with enough syrup and whip cream to launch your blood sugar level up into outer space. Foods loaded with unhealthy fats, added sugars, and refined carbohydrates are not how you want to start your day, especially when you are trying to have a healthy weight loss. They zap your energy levels so you will feel lathargic, and tell your body to store fat instead of burning it. To help you avoid these morning mishaps, fill your cupboards with the following foods to ensure a successful and healthy weight loss. Healthy Weight Loss Breakfast Food #1: Soy-Protein ShakeThis is how I lost 70 pounds 15 years ago and have kept it off ever since. Imagine getting 2,000 calories worth of nutrition for about 180 calories without the fat and sugar. It’s the closest thing you can get to diet magic, and it’s the best way to begin every day. What happens when your body gets the right nutrition? It begins to heal itself in ways you never thought possible. Nothing on any restuarant breakfast menu is going to offer good health like that. Healthy Weight Loss Breakfast Food #2: Green TeaMaking sure you are well hydrated is an important part of breakfast, so why not give your body the best liquid possible? Unplug your coffee maker and find a different route to work that doesn’t pass by a Starbucks. One cup of green tea every morning will give you enough energy to last an entire day, and you will not get the jitters like you might from coffee. Want to know the best part about green tea? It helps your body actually speed up your metabolism! Try finding that weight loss benefit in a fatty, over-priced latte. Healthy Weight Loss Breakfast Food #3: OatmealRemember when you were a kid and your mother made you eat oatmeal instead of your favorite cereal? That’s because it was healthy…and it still is, no matter how you prepare it. OK, so you can’t dump tons of sugar on it and make it taste like Apple Jacks, that’s a given. But you can sweeten it with fresh fruit or cranberries and raisins to enhance the taste. Just because you are older now and can make your own decisions doesn’t mean your mother wasn’t right. Healthy Weight Loss Breakfast Food #4: Scrambled Eggs With Vegetables & SteakSo you say you want to splurge sometimes and eat a real American breakfast like the kind you get at a truck stop? I hear you loud and clear. There’s nothing wrong with wanting that…if you want to gain weight. How do you do it while sticking to your healthy weight loss plan? Be creative. Make yourself an egg beater omelet with fresh vegetables and lean meat. Just because a truck stop wants to serve you certain food in a greasy way doesn’t mean you can’t eat te same thing in a healthy way. Healthy Weight Loss Breakfast Food #5: Fresh Fruit With GranolaRemember that recent high-protein low-carbohydrate diet fad that came and went faster than you could say Atkins? No one is on it anymore, and no one is thinner or healther because of it. Don’t ever let anyone convince you that something like a fresh apple is bad for you. Your body needs carbohydrates and there are few healthier sources than fruit and granola. It makes a great substitute for high sugar cereals. If you can sprinkle some protein powder on top of it, it’s an even better way to start your day. So there you have it…5 of the best breakfasts you can eat for losing weight in a healthy, natural way. It’s not easy to change your taste pallete, but try these suggestions little by little as replacement for the high fat, high sugar choices that made you gain weight. Living a healthy lifestyle is essential for healthy weight loss, and choosing to eat smart for breakfast is the first step in the right direction. Continue Reading »Have you ever been on a diet and found yourself being totally confused about how to read food labels? Not knowing this information could be the difference between weight loss success and failure. More often than not, people who are trying to achieve a healthy weight loss will not be able to do so just because they believe everything they read. Most of us think that foods labeled “low fat” will help us lose weight. If this were really true, why didn’t anyone from the fat free diet craze of the 1980’s lose weight and keep it off? You may be shocked to discover that low fat foods may do the opposite. Yes, that is right! They can actually make us gain weight! Since the driving force behind any weight loss fad is for the manufacturer to make money, low-fat labels purposely prompt people to overindulge in several different ways. I know you are asking yourself how such a farce can actually be allowed to happen, right? All I have to say to that is keep reading! Reading Food Labels Tip #1: Portion DistortionMost people believe that an appropriate serving size for low-fat food is 30 percent larger than the full-fat version. When this happens, nearly 50 percent more calories are consumed. No matter how much fat a product says it does or does not have, remember it is all about calories. Think of it this way. Which is better for weight loss: 1,000 fat calories from butter or 1,000 fat calories from apples? Neither! They will both give you 1,000 calories. Granted, the apples will give you lots of other vitamins and minerals that will make you healthier than the butter will, but you won’t weigh any less! Reading Food Labels Tip #2: Ingredient ShiftMost of the time when fat content is reduced, carbohydrate and sugars are increased. What happens when carbohydrates and sugars don’t get burned off? Your body turns them into fat so it will have a reserve of fuel. The bottom line is that you must look at all the ingredients, not just the big text on the front of the package that says NO FAT. Diet soda is much more harmful to your body than regular soda because of the nasty ingredients they have to add to make it diet. This goes for NO CARB and NO TRANS FAT foods as well. If a company making a product feels that it needs to grab your attention by promoting the latest weight loss fad in bold letters across the front of their package, chances are it probably is not a good choice. Reading Food Labels Tip #3: No Label Is KingWhat kinds of foods do not come pre-packaged with a label full of ingredients? Fruits and vegetables. What kinds of foods are all natural and grown from the earth we live on? Fruits and vegetables. What kinds of foods do you know will help you lose weight even though you would rather grab the box of fat free Oreos? Fruits and vegetables. Not that it needs to be said at this point, but if you can not determine if the label is saying something good or bad, put it down and head to the produce department. Fruits and vegetables are the most ideal foods you can eat for a healthy weight loss. What about protein, you say? Think soy. I lost 70 pounds and have kept it off for 15 years when I switched to a soy-protein based way of eating. Label or not, the key to a healthy weight loss is living a healthy lifestyle. Making smart decisions about what you eat, as well as exercising every day, will allow you to lead a label free life. Smart is choosing to eat an apple instead of a donut. Smart is choosing to drink a soy-based protein shake instead of a caramel whip cream latte from Starbucks. Smart is drinking green tea instead of diet Pepsi. Remember… for things to change, you have got to change. Continue Reading »Eat more to weigh less. Those words are music to anyone’s ears who has ever tried to lose weight. It may not seem possible, but eating the right foods can help you drop pounds by revving your calorie burn and curbing cravings. You know that starving yourself isn’t a successful healthy weight loss plan, and who wants to eat bean sprouts and salads at every meal? If you begin adding the following super foods to your plate today, you will have a better chance of being slimmer and healthier in no time! Healthy Weight Loss Super-Food #1: SteakBeef has a reputation of being a bad for our diet, but it’s a good choice for dinner when you want to shed unwanted pounds. People who include red meat into their diet generally lose more weight than those eating other foods of equal calories. As an added benefit, protein in steak helps retain muscle mass during weight loss. Want the best results? Go for the local organic beef. Healthy Weight Loss Super-Food #2: EggsEggs (including the yolk) can help you trim inches without harming your heart. An egg each morning can allow you to lose twice as many pounds as the alternative of a bagel breakfast with the same number of calories. Egg protein is quite filling, so as a result you eat less later in the day. Omelets and scrambles are obvious choices, but if you can’t cook before work, grab a soy-protein shake and save your eggs for the weekend. Healthy Weight Loss Super-Food #3: KaleBirds love it, and have you ever seen a fat bird? Kale should always find a place somewhere on your dinner plate. One cup contains only 34 calories while providing you with a hearty helping of iron and calcium. Not into kale’s earthy flavor? Try spinach as an alternative. It’s just as nutrient dense, but with a milder-taste. Healthy Weight Loss Super-Food #4: Buckwheat pastaForget all those diets that tell you carbohydrates are bad. You need them for fuel or else your body will start grabbing it from your muscles. Instead of going for plain noodles, try buckwheat. It is higher in fiber and unlike most carbohydrate-rich foods, it contains protein! These two nutrients make it very satiating, so it’s harder to overeat than regular pasta. Healthy Weight Loss Super-Food #5: PomegranatesPomegranate seeds are loaded with folate and disease-fighting antioxidants. They’re low in calories and high in fiber, so they satisfy your sweet tooth without ruining your healthy weight loss efforts. Healthy Weight Loss Super-Food #6: BeansBeans are a very good sources of protein, fiber and iron. Navy, White, Kidney and Lima beans are all fat-burning foods. The only ones that you should limit are those baked and refried because they contain tons of saturated fat and sugar. Healthy Weight Loss Super-Food #7: OatmealWhile it may not be the tastiest thing you can eat, oatmeal definitely has fat burning qualities. It helps lower your cholesterol level and blood cholesterol because of it’s abundance of soluble fiber. Just like beans, you can’t always go for Americanized version, you know the yummy apples and cinnamon version loaded with butter and sugar. If regular oatmeal tastes too bland, sweeten your bowl by adding fruit, honey or cranberries. Healthy Weight Loss Super-Food #8: Olive OilOlive oil is one of those good fats that your body needs. It’s so good, in fact, that it helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. Rich in monounsaturated fat, olive oil provides outstanding health benefits. Healthy Weight Loss Super-Food #9: Green TeaWant to talk about anti-oxidants? It doesn’t get any better than this. Green tea not only provides you with enough natural energy to last throughout the day, but it is loaded with antioxidants and helps accelerate your metabolism. Stop drinking 3 cups of coffee every morning and switch to one cup of this super food. You’ll watch your pounds melt away while feeling energetic at the same time. Of course, all of these foods should be accompanied with a daily exercise regimen in order for them to be the most effective for healthy weight loss. Cardiovascular exercise burns calories and building muscle burns fat. Once you condition yourself to make healthier food choices and exercise every day, you’ll be on your way to losing weight and keeping it off for good. Continue Reading »Even though everyone loses weight in a different way, it is common and perfectly normal for any dieter to reach a plateau. Instead of allowing it to frustrate you, use it as an opportunity to double up your efforts and reconnect with your strategy to carry you through to the finish line. Listed below are 5 of the best ways to re-ignite the healthy weight loss process when you feel challenged. Choose the tips that work best for you or simply go for them all! Healthy Weight Loss Plateau Breaker #1: Start ExercisingAlthough you can lose weight without exercise, it will always accellerate your efforts. If you are not injured or do not suffer from severe asthma, be thankful that you can get outside and move your body. Take advantage of your ability to be active because many people do not have that luxury. The more you exercise, the better you will get at it, and the less it will feel like work. If you are already exercising, add something different to the mix to make your body working harder. Add intensity, in the form of extra weight, run faster or for a longer distance, or more duration. Going until you fail is the easiest way to ensure you’re pushing hard enough. Add extra sit-ups and push-ups before you go to sleep and when you wake up. Done in the AM on an empty stomach, this can kick-start your metabolism by teaching your body to more efficiently mobilize its fat stores for energy. Healthy Weight Loss Plateau Breaker #2: Make Healthier Eating ChoicesWhen you are trying to lose weight, there is nothing more important than proper nutrition. Your body can perform miracles with choices like soy protein shakes, fruits and vegetables. You’ll not only bust past your plateau, but you’ll do it in a healthy way. Eliminate refined sugar grains (most pre-packaged snack foods) so carbohydrates can not get their way unnoticed into your diet. Cutting back on how often you eat can have a negative impact on your diet plateau as well. Small, frequent meals are more satisfying and produce better weight-loss results than the same number of calories consumed in three large meals. Take advantage of healthys nacks like protein bars, soy nuts and fresh vegetable and fruit slices. Eating more of the right kinds of food is a much smarter plan of action to break a healthy weight loss plateau than starving yourself. Healthy Weight Loss Plateau Breaker #3: Drink Green TeaWhenever I want to lose 5 or 10 pounds of stubborn belly fat, I drink more green tea. Packed with more vitamins and antioxidants than any other drink, green tea is an all-natural way to give yourself energy to compliment your enthusiasm for losing weight. The best part, however, is that green tea ahas the amazing ability to actually speed up your metabolism! You will notice results right away with just one cup, but the more you drink it, the more you will want it! Healthy Weight Loss Plateau Breaker #4: Keep Your Incentive Strongthe body achieves what the mind believes. If you don’t believe you can make it past the hurdle of a weight loss plateau, you probably won’t. You’ll give up before you have a chance to even try. Focus on re-capturing the determination you felt when you first began your weight-loss program. The excitement of watching the pounds drop one by one should be the focus of your motivation. If it was something that has come and gone, like a high school reunion or a wedding, choose a new goal. Start keeping a diet journal of everything you eat and drink. You may quickly discover that hidden carbohydrates and sugars are keeping your healthy weight-loss progress stuck at the plateau. Eliminate trigger foods or anything that you think may be contributing to your inability to lose more weight. If you are eating pretzels every day at 2pm, don’t starve yourself by not eating if you are hungry at that time…just replace the pretzels with something healthier like fruit or chicken. Healthy Weight Loss Plateau Breaker #5: Drink More WaterIt is extremely important to replenish your fluids by drinking plenty of water on any weight loss program, especially if you are incorporating exercise on a daily basis. An inadequate supply of water can slow down your weight-loss, so carry a water bottle with you wherever you go throughout the day. Keeping well hydrated not only helps you burn fat efficiently, it also helps control hunger. Follow these 5 steps and you will have a better chance of breaking your healthy weight loss plateau than if youcontinue stressing over the obstacle. Each time you sit down to eat or have a snack, take a moment to become mindful that the food you are about to eat is either taking you one step closer to your goal, or one step away. As you make this mental connection, and dedicate each serving of food or drink to your weight loss, you will naturally be inclined to enjoy the foods and drinks that pushed you past your plateau. Continue Reading »Anyone struggling to lose weight may be focusing all of their energy on the wrong thing…food! It is equally important to make sure you are drinking liquids that accelerate healthy weight loss. Staying hydrated is essential for your body. What you drink can effect your mood and focus not to mention your health. If you pick the right drinks, you will benefit from the nutrients, antioxidants and proteins that will help with a healthy weight loss. Americans in general are problem drinkers. We crave high-sugar, high-calorie drinks like sodas and smoothies. Over 20 percent of American’s calorie intake comes from drinks such as soda pop, fruit punches, and the oh-so trendy Starbuck lattes. We are becoming obese because of all these extra calories we do not need. The next time you feel thirsty and have trouble determining whether or not a drink is healthy, refer to the list below. Healthy Weight Loss Drink #1: Water Water is a crucial part of healthy weight loss success. Forget flavored energy drinks and expensive bottled water. Remember the free stuff that comes out of your kitchen sink? We all grew up on this stuff and no one became unhealthy because of it, yet for some reason we flock to the store to buy it in a bottle just because a television commerical tells us to. If you think your tap water is full of impurities, buy a Brita water purifying pitcher or some type of water filter. The main point here is that pure water is healthier than any kind of diet soda or energy drink you can pay for. Drink up to 8 glasses a day and you will notice an acceleration in your weight loss. Healthy Weight Loss Drink #2: Pomegranate Juice Drinking concentrated pomegranate juice may reduce cholesterol and blood pressure while slowing down LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) oxidation. Because they contain beneficial antioxidants, they rid your body of harmful free radicals that can slow down any weight loss program. The healthier your body is, the better it can perform. Pomegranate juice is safe to drink, but just like anything else you should not over-indulge. Most studies have shown that a daily helping of 1.5 oz. of pomegranate juice is the most beneficial. Anti-oxidants are found in bright colored fruits like red grapes. Unlike pomegranate juice, be careful when drinking grape juice. Manufacturers tend to add a lot of sugar into fruit juices so they seem healthy, but they really are not. Healthy Weight Loss Drink #3: Green Tea Green tea is one of the drinks I use on a daily basis that contributes to helping me keep an ideal weight after losing 70 pounds 15 years ago. Just like pomegranite juice, it is full of powerful antioxidants that give your body the very best fuel a drink can possibly give. Depending on the manufacturer, green tea comes in all kinds of flavors. One cup of green tea every morning gives me enough energy to last all day long. It is a natural energy, unlike the sugar rush you get from fitness drinks and coffee, so you never feel let down as the day goes on. Energy is obviously important for weight loss because the more you move around, the more calories you will burn. Healthy Weight Loss Drink #4: Soy-Based Protein Shakes Along with green tea, soy-based protein shakes are responsible for my weight loss and weight maintenance. Imagine getting 2,000 calories worth of nutrition in a 200 calorie smoothie. Your body gets what it needs without the excess baggage that comes with eating tons of food. It is the closest thing to a magic weight loss potion that you will find. Depending on how much weight you need to lose, this drink acts as a meal replacement. Obese people who need to lose over 100 pounds should obviously replace each meal with a shake, and those maintaining weight should replace at least one. I would never let a day go by without one of these powerful drinks. Why would I? I have been at my ideal weight and medication free ever since I introduced them into my diet. The bottom line here is that you must pay attention to what you drink as much as what you eat if you are trying to lose or maintain a healthy weight. Start by replacing what you are now drinking with any or all of the suggestions above. Living a healthy lifestyle is the key to reaching your healthy weight loss goals. That requires the mindset of person willing to make small changes on a daily basis. You are what you eat…and drink!
