One of the most common obstacles for a person trying to lose weight is emotional eating. Munching down a bag of potato chips out of boredom, depression or even happiness can be a serious detriment to anyone’s weight loss efforts. It’s not easy to overcome because life is full of events that make us change our emotions. You could be a month into your healthy weight loss program and feeling very good about it, then all of a sudden you get downsized from your job. The first thing you do is become depressed and drive yourself to the grocery store to get a package of double stuff oreos. You know comfort foods like this will only make you more depressed in the morning, but you do it anyway. If you want to be the kind of person who leaves the cookies on the shelf and focus instead on turning negatives into positives, the 6 tips below can help you. Emotional Eating Tip #1: Be PreparedAs I said before, no matter what kind of life you have, there will always be something about to happen that will make you sad or happy. These moments must be expected and the solution approached with caution. What do you do when you see a speed bump in the road? You automatically slow down because you know the consequences. You were prepared because you expected it. Just like you read road signs when you drive, there are signs in life that will tell you when something is about to happen. Emotional Eating Tip #2: DistractionsWhenever you are overjoyed or depressed about something, have a list of activities ready to take your mind off emotional eating. Keeping your hands busy doing anything besides reaching into a box of Cheez-its, is going to help you overcome your shift in emotions without eating. For me it is closing myself off to the world and practicing my guitar, playing a video game, or going for a long walk with my Ipod. By the time I am finished with any of these activities, I have usually found a solution or at least have calmed down. Emotional Eating Tip #3: Drink A Bottle Of WaterThis does not sound like something you want to do when you are extremely happy or angry, but water fills you up and makes you feel more full. Anyone on a healthy weight loss program should have a bottle of water handy at all times anyway. When you feel the urge to eat off your program, drink the water. Trust me, it works like a charm. A lot of times people mistake hunger for thirst. Your mind might be tricking you and telling you that you need to eat, when you just might need a drink. Emotional Eating Tip #4: Determine What Is WhatDo you crave a bowl of Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream or do you just need someone to talk to? When you’re struggling with a craving or feel driven to eat mindlessly, stop and determine what you are feeling. Condition yourself to learn the difference between physical and emotional hunger. I crave eating junk food any time something good happens and when something bad happens I tend to avoid eating. But when I am truly hungry, I will eat healthy foods. Emotional Eating Tip #5: Focus On The Consequences Of Your ActionsIf you stop and think for a minute what that Hershey bar will feel like after you eat it, you might start building up the will power to put it down. You know you will feel bad emotionally because you threw your diet off track, so eat something healthy and get full on that instead. Think about how tomorrow you won’t even remember the taste of it. Maybe that will make you want to eat the carrots instead. Emotional Eating Tip #6: Eat In The Same PlaceRemember the kitchen table? You know that piece of furniture that your monthly bills are usually scattered over? Clear it off and make a promise to yourself to only do your eating there, with no distractions like the tv, radio or newspaper. I know this is the age of multi-tasking, but a lot of emotional eating occurs when we are distracted. Mindless eating in front of the tv is the worst, especially when it is done late at night. No matter what kind of life you have, there will always be problems, even people who are in great physical shape. They may be able to arrive at their problems looking slim and trim, but they have just as many obstacles as a person struggling to lose weight. No matter who you are, you must work your emotions by expecting these obstacles. By stopping emotional eating, you can eliminate about half of the obstacles people face trying to lose weight. You can not walk into a grocery store anymore and leave without spending at least ten dollars on things that used to cost mere pocket change. Milk. Bread. Eggs. Butter. It all adds up so quickly now, and people are realizing they need to cut costs somewhere. Unfortunately, most health foods are more expensive than pre-packaged foods that are not as good for our bodies. The first thing people will do is start eating Tuna Helper for dinner instead of chicken, steak or shrimp. If you are on a healthy weight loss program, and you do not want to eat Tuna Helper but want to save money, what do you do? If you think that a $100 weight loss program is not an option, you may want to think again! I personally lost 70 pounds in 3 months and have kept it off for over 15 years. After spending $2,000 at Nutri-Systems only to lose 60 pounds and gain 80, a $100 a month weight loss program was the last thing I wanted to buy. But since it came with a money back guarantee, I gave it a shot. Not only did it work, but I actually saved money! Here’s how… The first thing you must realize is that no healthy weight loss program is worth the money unless it is all-natural. What you put into your body is going to determine how you look and feel. There is no way around it. The majority of people who eat donuts every morning for breakfast are fat and unhealthy. Those who eat oatmeal instead are usually thin and healthy. Since the program I tried was all-natural soy-based protein meal replacement shakes with target vitamins, I was able to lose weight in a healthy way. Not only did I lose weight, but my severe asthma and allergies cleared up and I was able to get off all of my prescription medications. When you feed your body proper nutrition, it has the ability to heal itself and perform better. Each shake I drank was a meal replacement. The nutrition in each one was the equivalent of eating a 2,000 calorie meal, but I was only consuming 200 calories. You can easily see how this helps a person lose weight. At first I replaced two meals a day until I was at my desired weight, then I switched to just replacing one to maintain that weight. Why stop giving my body good nutrition just because I reached my weight loss goal? A meal replacement means you are not spending money at McDonalds, Starbucks or IHOP anymore, where you spend a minimum of $50 a week, and in the most generous circumstances. Most healthy weight loss programs cost about $100 a month, so you would be saving money and getting healthy at the same time. Even replacing one meal a day would still be cheaper than if you were not trying to lose weight but creating a healthy lifestyle. I know what you are thinking. Who wants to drink a bland milk shake for breakfast when you could be eating an oversized plate of caramel pecan waffles with syrup and whipped cream? The answer to that question is two-fold. First of all, the soy-protein shakes I drink are not bland. They come in a variety of flavors in powder form, and I can be as creative as I want to be with them. I do not even need to make a shake, I can sprinkle it over cereal or mix it in yogurt. The second answer to that question is that what you eat is a matter of choice. Sure you can go out and eat those waffles, but you will not lose weight if you do. You spend about $10 to gain a few pounds. It will taste nice and yummy for the first few bites until you stuff yourself, but then you will regret not having the shake a few hours later when your blood sugar drops down lower than when you woke up. Since most healthy weight loss programs come in a month supply, you must pay for the whole month in advance. This is where most people think they can not afford to eat healthy, and it simply is not true. Do the math. Replacing two meals a day will save you how much money? About $150 if all you spend is $5 a meal. How much does each meal replacement cost if the total price is about $100 for the month? About $1.60. Is $1.60 per meal for a healthy weight loss program worth more than spending $5 a meal to gain weight? Only a person who is not serious about losing weight would say no. No matter what healthy weight loss program you are contemplating, you must first be committed to living a healthy lifestyle or else your money will be wasted. Once you make the decision to stick with it, weigh all our options and do the math. When times are rough like they are now, your first observation might be that you can not afford it. When you break it down meal for meal, then add up all the health benefits you will also get, you will probably find that you can make it work to your advantage. Continue Reading »In today’s world of highly advertised fad diets, it is very difficult for us to know which foods are actually healthy and which foods are not. This program says not to eat an apple, while this other program tells us it keeps the doctor away. Once and for all, we need to know which foods are nutritious so we can all jump off the weight loss roller coaster. Before I get into the details, it is important to stress that weight loss without proper nutrition is not the road you want to take. No magic pill will ever give you the benefits of eating properly. Stop looking for short cuts and get serious about your health. It is the only way to live a lifestyle that is free of the threats of disease, poor health and obesity. Healthy Foods Tip #1: Green VegetablesVegetables such as spinach and cabbage are very significant in maintaining a healthy body. They are rich in vitamins and minerals. How do they help accelerate weight loss? They are water-rich, which means you are actually filling yourself up with liquids instead of fatty calories. Healthy Foods Tip #2: Fatty FishDid you read that right? Yes, it says fatty! Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines have omega-3 fats. Despite all the hoopla surrounding the fat-free weight loss craze, your body does in fact need good fat for optimal weight loss performance. Omega-3 fats also takes care of our heart. It prevents stroke and lowers bad cholesterol in our body. Healthy Foods Tip #3: Green Tea Anti-oxidants rid our bodies of free radials that can cause damage to our cells and slow the process of healthy weight loss. Green tea offers such a powerful supply of anti-oxidants and vitamins that it has been known to accelerate metabolism by drinking only one cup per day. Tomatoes, red grapes and blueberries are also beneficial for the same reasons, but on a smaller scale. Healthy Foods Tip #4: Citrus fruitsOranges, lemons, limes and other citrus fruits are all high in Vitamin C. That helps to prevents colds, asthma and arthritis. What happens when your body is functioning without illness? It performs better! When your body gets the right nutrition, it can perform its own miracles…like giving you more energy and burning off extra weight. Healthy Foods Tip #5: CarrotsHave you ever heard someone say carrots were unhealthy? I guess they would be if you ate tons of them every day, just like anything else that is abused. The reality is that carrots are good source of Vitamin A and promotes better eyesight. It only takes a half cup worth to work like magic to accelerate healthy weight loss. Healthy Foods Tip #6. BananasThis fruit is so nutrition that even monkeys know it is good for them. It can help cure ulcers, diarrhea and stomach cramps because it is high in potassium. If you sweat a lot and need energy, grab a banana. Many athletes consume bananas for energy and alertness. Have you ever seen an overweight monkey or athlete? Healthy Foods Tip #7: SoyThe soybean is as close to a magic weight loss pill as you will ever find. No, you can not pop them into your mouth and watch the pounds melt away, but when you add soy into your daily diet, you will be amazed to see how quickly your health and weight loss improve at the same time. Soy-based protein smoothies helped me to lose 70 pounds in 4 months 15 years ago. And yes, I still have the weight off! Healthy Foods Tip #8 ApplesAn apple a day keeps the doctor away. It has vitamin C and pectin that flushes out toxins in our body. Toxins are probably the number one reason why people can not lose weight quickly when they eat healthy foods. Apples only work to your advantage when they are eaten raw, so dipping them into caramel sauce or cooking them into a pie will not keep the doctor away. Healthy Foods Tip #9. WaterIt may not be food but it is the most important part of your daily diet. Your body can not function properly if it is dehydrated, and most people do not drink as much as they should. Water also makes you feel full without any calories. Many times people reach for a snack when all they really need is a glass of water. Along with a daily diet of the foods listed above, you need discipline and a willingness to reach your healthy weight loss goals. Most people get discouraged with losing weight when they fail to grasp the concept of living a healthy lifestyle. Once you develop this mindset, eating healthy will be part of your daily routine…and battling weight gain will be a thing of the past.
